Rescue dog

This is an amazing heart-rending of a rescue dog.  Check it out.
I wish more people would rescue pets. I'm glad we have a rescue cat, but wish out building allowed us to have a dog -- I'd rescue one in a heartbeat!

Pet
Adoptions Followed by Pet Returns Post-holiday life has returned
to normal ... for most of us. For those of us who have a new pet, we
may be finding that our newest member of the family is too much to
handle. This week's feature article focuses on holiday pets that have
been returned because people weren't ready for them. If you - or
someone you know - were considering adopting a pet, there's no better
time than the present. Overcrowded shelters need pet parents now more
than at any other time of year.

Starting the year off right could start with a trip this weekend - to
your nearest pet adoption center!   Bone

Aggressive behavior in cats isn't always obvious to owner
Many owners misinterpret aggressive behavior between cats as play, or they don't notice it at all because cats can be covertly aggressive, writes animal behaviorist Jennie Willis. Often times only litter box problems or overt aggression get the owner's attention, but Dr. Willis describes earlier types of aggression in cats in this article and urges owners to address problems early.  Coloradoan (Fort Collins, Colo.), The (1/16)

Veterinarian establishes pet loss support group
Owners' grief lingers long after their pet dies, says veterinarian Phil Zeltzman, who established a support group for owners called Wings. While veterinarians are sensitive to owners' sense of loss in the wake of a pet's death and may offer such amenities as grieving rooms and separate exits for use after euthanasia, many clients need more avenues to cope, says Dr. Zeltzman.  Morning Call (Allentown, Pa.), The (1/10)

Podcast: Claw and order
Destructive behavior, such as scratching furniture, is one of the leading reasons people give up on pet cats. This problem can be solved by declawing, but what if you don't want to declaw your cat, or live in a town that doesn't allow the procedure? In this AVMA Animal Tracks podcast, Dr. Bonnie Beaver, a veterinary behaviorist and past president of the AVMA, offers tips on how to keep your kitty's claws from ripping up your furniture. Dogs sense communication in ways similar to infants, study finds
New research finds that dogs engage in gaze-following, a behavior displayed by human babies in which they look in the same direction of another human who has first made eye contact or otherwise communicated with them. "Our findings reveal that dogs are receptive to human communication in a manner that was previously attributed only to human infants," said co-author Jozsef Topal of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.  ABC News (1/5)
